Detective French escorted me into the Boise Police Department and led me to back to her desk. Several other workstations were in the area. She leaned against hers and folded her arms. “Have a seat.”

I settled in an office chair.

She took a seat opposite me. “We’re looking into Mrs. Hernandez’s death. I don’t have too many questions. Could you tell me in your own words what happened?”

I went on for ten minutes.

Detective French finished taking notes. “Ms. Burke declined your offer to help with the drinks. How do you two get along?”

“Fine, I guess.”

“How’d you meet her?”

“I met Tara in my professional capacity.”

“Have you spoken to her outside of that?”

“Four times. First day I met her, I asked her to dinner. She declined.”

French chuckled. “And after that?”

“Two weeks ago, I went to the campaign office and I volunteered to help with the mailing and we talked.”

“About what?”

I sighed. I hate being on the other end of these questions. “I’ll just say I made a pass at her. I wasn’t intending to be disrespectful, but she took it that way.”

“So pass intercepted. Then what?”

“Ten days ago, I was eating dinner at the Fish Shack, and she joined me. She asked me about investigating an aspect of her libel case against the paper. Then I ran into her at the Hernandez’s place. Ms. Waters and Mr. Newton were also there. We played music together and we ate lunch at the same table.”

“Anything else outside of work?”

“Tara and I are Facebook friends.”

“So would you describe your relationship as cordial?”

When it’s not stiff, formal, and cold. “That’s a good word.”

“So you can’t explain why she refused your offer of assistance.”

“It could be that she was using the trays for weightlifting.”

Detective French rolled her eyes. “Any serious explanation?”

“Aside from the fact she can’t seem to make up her mind whether she hates me? No.”

French rocked in her chair a moment. She pointed to the computer at another desk. “Turn this into a statement. We’ll have you out of here soon.”

After I’d printed out my statement, I brought it back over to her.

She scanned it. “You forgot to include that you’re not aware of why she refused your offer.”

“Why do you need that? As I recall it, I said maybe she doesn’t like me.”

“Unless you know that for certain, say you don’t know.”

“Why does it matter?”

“The day I start giving you information on my case is the day I check myself into the state hospital in Blackfoot. Can you think of any reason you shouldn’t include it?”

“No.”

“Then add it to the statement, so we can get out of here.”

“Are you going to hold me if I don’t?”

Growling, Detective French folded her hands together into the shape of a gun. “Fine, if you insist, sign what you have and go home.”

I pulled out my pen, signed it, and slid it at Burke to her. “Here you go.”

She scooped it up. “Thank you.”

I left the police station.

Once I was back at the office, I typed up my report on my interview with Katrina’s four friends.
